Knowledge Integration and Open Innovation in the Cosmetics Industry in Brazil
PhD abstract
The importance of innovation for the development and competitiveness of companies and nations has been shown by a vast amount of theoretical and empirical work (Freeman 1997; Pavitt 2003). More recently, an emphasis on open business models has emerged in the literature of innovation, mainly represented by “Open Innovation” (OI) (Christensen, Olesen et al. 2005; 2006a; 2006b; Chesbrough 2006c; 2007a), which suggests that some companies are searching for knowledge that is available globally, and negotiating their internal knowledge, beyond the boundaries of traditional R&D laboratories. Shorter life cycles of products and longer R&D lead-times pushed innovative practices to a different level of inter-organizational dynamics (Allio 2005). Also, globalized R&D activities are a response of companies to the greater dissemination of knowledge throughout the world, which means that companies need to develop skills to unveil and get connected to external sources of technology (Vanhaverbeke, Cloodt et al. 2007). Openness in innovation brings new challenges to knowledge management in terms of coordinating collaborative work, dealing with intellectual properties issues, developing absorptive capacity, among others. Most of these challenges are directly related to knowledge integration, demanding special attention from scholars and practitioners.
