Strategic Technology and Innovation Management (TIM) – a reference method for developing a TIM strategy process within a generic business process architecture
PhD abstract
The thesis analyzes existing practical and theoretical approaches for the development of a TIM strategy and its organizational implementation in SME’s. The purpose is to present a reference method for the strategic TIM. Starting with a meta-model, a generic TIM process architecture is developed, using the reference method of business process reengineering. The thesis focuses on the technology and innovation strategy process which has to be aligned on the corporate business strategy. The interfaces with corresponding business processes within and beyond the TIM process landscape are highlighted and analyzed. The main hypothesis is that companies can leverage their innovation performance and thus the corporate business value by integrating the long-term perspective as well as the open innovation paradigm within their TIM strategy process. The hypothesis is tested and validated through comparative case studies in SME’s operating in technology intensive industry as well as through a cross-industry quantitative study, launched in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
