The Study of Knowledge Ownership for Corporate Competitiveness: The Example of Patent Ownership
PhD abstract
Even if the disclosure of patents encourages the diffusion of knowledge, the firms have no right to make or use the claimed invention without the ownership or the licensing grants. Moreover, patent ownership is one of the patterns of knowledge ownership. If a firm obtains valuable and rare resources, it can makes good use of those resources in implementing value-creating strategies that cannot be duplicated by other companies to obtain sustainable competitiveness. In this study, we will mainly use the record of patent transactions from USPTO in 1976-2008 to examine the kind of patent and when it will be traded through the change of patent portfolio strategy within the firm. Finally, this study will explore the power of patent ownership for corporate competitiveness through comparing relative performance with respect to the competitors.
