Open Innovation Intermediaries: Towards a Typology and Theory of Intermediation

  • PhD abstract

Research on Open Innovation Intermediaries (OII) has suggested that their primary function is the accelerated matching of innovation seekers and providers (Chesbrough, 2006).  However, OII represent a small share of a large group of innovation intermediaries such as technology parks, incubators, innovation brokers, etc. Up to now, this large group of intermediaries has been studied under the umbrella of: 1) the brokerage literature, 2) intermediation market theory, 3) social intermediaries, and 4) technology transfer.  Henry's research sheds light on how different types of innovation intermediaries facilitate the Open Innovation process, contributing to the knowledge integration process, as well as their impact at the regional level. This study draws upon case studies in Spain, Sweden and USA and will provide the first typology of Open Innovation Intermediaries.
